Pronunciation of -ise in Verbs and Nouns
Pronunciation of -ise in Verbs and Nouns Pronunciation of -ise in Verbs and Nouns Pronunciation of -ise in Verbs and Nouns By Maeve Maddox The letter s represents two sounds in English, the unvoiced sound /s/ heard in sister, and the voiced sound /z/ heard in rose. Note: The ââ¬Å"voicedâ⬠s sound buzzes, like the sound of /z/. The unvoiced s sound is ââ¬Å"soft,â⬠like the hiss of a snake. When the spelling combination -ise occurs in verbs and nouns, the s is usually voiced, but not always. Verbs in which the s in -ise is voiced: arise advertise apprise chastise circumcise comprise compromise (BUT: promise with /s/) demise despise devise disfranchise disguise enfranchise excise exercise improvise incise revise supervise surmise surprise While on the subject of -ise endings in verbs, a comment is probably in order on the widespread misconception that the verb ending -ize as in synthesize is an American corruption of lovely English verbs that ââ¬Å"shouldâ⬠end in -ise. The OED recommends the -ize ending for verbs that derive from Greek, and, as demonstrated by the list above, Americans have not altogether abandoned the -ise ending. The usage differs only with verbs in -yze, like analyze and paralyze. OED prefers analyse and paralyse for etymological reasons. In its entry on the suffix -ize, the OED states the rationale for preferring the -ize spelling: the suffix itself, whatever the element to which it is added, is in its origin the Greek -izein, Latin -izà re; and, as the pronunciation is also with z, there is no reason why in English the special French spelling should be followed, in opposition to that which is at once etymological and phonetic. For a fascinating comparison of views on the subject of -ize vs. -ise, see Mike Horneââ¬â¢s The -ize have it!â⬠Nouns in which the s in -ise is voiced: chemise demise enterprise franchise expertise surprise valise (British) Nouns in which the s is unvoiced: anise paradise promise premise treatise (a secondary pronunciation with /z/ is given in the OED) valise (American) vise Some of you may be surprised to see expertise listed with the nouns in which the s has the /z/ sound. The pronunciation of expertise with the unvoiced s is rampant on American television, but both the OED and Merriam-Webster Unabridged agree that the pronunciation is [EK-spur-TEEZ]. Some other dictionaries now list the unvoiced pronunciation as an acceptable alternative, but Charles Elster is having none of it: â⬠Careful speakers should make an extra effort to hold the line on this one [EK-spur-TEEZ].â⬠ââ¬âThe Big Book of BEASTLY Mispronunciations, page 189. The economy in California Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
The economy in California - Essay Example In the course of this assessment and analysis, various factors are considered in light of their effects and implications on the economy. These factors are divided according to their level of influence and their scope in regards to how each individual entity can deal with them (Melvin & Boyes, 122). As such, economics as a social science incorporates aspects of creation, circulation and utilization of commodities and services within an economy and the various factors that affect this cycle. For a proper and more insightful analysis of these factors, the concepts of micro and macroeconomics are introduced to deal with varying perspectives of the way in which various dynamics impact on the economy. Microeconomics often deals with aspects that are within a given economic entityââ¬â¢s scope, and refers to factors that the entity has control over. On the other hand, macroeconomics lays emphasis on factors that an economic entity has little or no control over, especially factors that hav e a national, transnational or global scope. An example of a factor that affects the economy on a national perspective is the inflation rate, or the level of inflation within the economy. As such, the analysis of this factor forms an insightful upshot from which the impact of macroeconomic factors can be viewed in relation to the economy. BODY: On a general platform, inflation can be described as the gradual increase in the prices of commodities and service provision within an economy over a given period. This is occasioned by the value of the currency dropping, whereby the financial might of a unit of currency drops and it is able to purchase lesser and lesser items as the level of inflation increases.... On other platforms, inflation refers to an average increase in the money circulating within an economy, as occasioned by the value of the currency dropping warranting the need for more legal tender to complete a transaction (Melvin & Boyes, 134). Inflation is caused by a number of factors, ranging from government expenditure exceeding the revenues, or the private sector causing shortfalls in output resulting in demand exceeding the supply of goods and services. Moreover, increased production costs also result in increased prices of goods thereby resulting in inflation. The measure for inflation is carried out through the price index that monitors the overall pricing of consumer goods and services over a given period. The general percentage change in price roughly implicates the inflation level within the economy. The impacts of inflation can be both positive and negative in some instances. However, its negative force is more impacting than the positive effects (McEachern, 187). There are levels of inflation, with low levels of inflation generally considered not as harmful. However, zero and high inflation are considered harmful to any economy. The major impact of inflation is that it creates a financial shortage for individuals who are surviving on a fixed income. This is occasioned by the lack of income dynamism in relation to the rate of inflation (McEachern, 222). The amount of disposable income for such individuals decreases, thereby leading to less expenditure, further enhancing the inflation rate. This results in minimized savings, as more money is used in purchases that were previously less straining on the financial muscle. However, inflation can also result in hidden tax raises especially in

Repoliticalization of Accounting Standard Setting Assignment
Repoliticalization of Accounting Standard Setting - Assignment Example Some researchers have claimed that the drive behind financial systems is accounting policy-makers and the forces in the market. The affair has been much on the adoption or rejection of fair value principle. EU rejected IAS 39ââ¬â¢s proposal of fair value principle. In addition, it put conditions on the extent to which the asset factor can be realized. It led to the amendment of the IAS 39 and IRFS 7. The EU and G20 have on more than one occasion discussed financial institutions and regulations on monetary policies. They have given guidance on securities valuation (BENGTSSON, Elias, 2011). Moreover, they proposed being a supervisory body or that the IASB should be constantly supervised in its activities. Opinion Political influence on financial in my view is not a bad agenda but their negative influence. The institution is no longer at ease to perform its functions with the profession required. On the other hand, the EU declined the adoption of IFRS 9 after the financial crisis, leaving the world amazed about the political forces behind financial institutions. IAS 39 was established under political pressure and went further to affect its operation when mistrust arose between the EU and US financial institutions. The political drive wheel should be to facilitate the growth of financial institutions and not curtail their operations.

Crossfire :: essays research papers
One characteristic of Matt Cordell in the book, Crossfire, by H Edward Hunsburger, is risky. Cordell risks his life by getting into gunfights to help recover the missing merchandise. He also risks the lives of his customers. à à à à à Matt Cordell has been noticed before for his outstanding recoveries. He had received a telegram from a woman, Elizabeth Talbert, who requested him to meet her at the Interocean Hotel. She had something important to ask him. When he got there, Mrs. Talbert told Cordell what was so important. She wanted Cordell to find her son, who had left a month ago to paint. She had money stored in a bank in Tucson, but it was never withdrawn. Cordell did not agree with it right away, but with Mrs. Talbertââ¬â¢s persuasive talking, he ended up taking the job. The catch was that Mrs. Talbert would go along, Cordell did not agree with this. The next day, they headed out. à à à à à While riding, they came upon a dead man. He had a bullet hole in his chest, and all of his pockets were turned inside out. The body had not been lying there long, and there were still tracks around the body and hoof prints from the horses. Cordell loaded the body onto the horse, and they rode to Benson. When they got to Benson, they headed to the office of Sam Keaton, the sheriff. Sam was not a nice guy, and Cordell could tell from the beginning that there was something bad about him. Cordell talked to Sam about the killing and asked if Sam would arrange a proper burial. When Mrs. Talbert and Cordell left, they went to the stable and met Jamie Kilcannon. Later, they went to the hotel and checked in. Cordell told Mrs. Talbert to meet him in an hour, and they would go get something to eat. But instead, Mrs. Talbert snuck out. When Cordell noticed that she was gone, it was already too late. She was in a bar with a bunch of rough men, and Cordell had to fight them to save her. They barely escaped and went back to the motel room. Late that night when Cordell was sleeping, he heard the scraping of a key in the lock of his door. The person at the door was Meg Demsey, a saloon girl. She told Cordell that she had some information on Paul. She had a drawing of her signed by Paul.

ââ¬ÅHigh Tide in Tucsonââ¬Â Barbara Kingsolver Essay
This Essay is from her book of essays ââ¬Å"High Tide in Tucsonâ⬠in which Barbara Kingsolver shares her beliefs and her commitments ââ¬â specifically, in family, community, the common good, cultural diversity, the world of children, and child rearing, which she lets in or rushes out to embrace all the wonders, beauties, threats, and angers that life and earth can offer. It also touches on many aspects and nuances that make life worth living; she is able to draw from her experiences to teach others the many life lessons that she has learned about child rearing. This excerpt from her book has a very personal tone; this closeness makes her story more realistic and believable. It is this sincerity and openness that makes the story warm. The author has been known as an advocate of nature. She devotes much respect to the other inhabitants of her world. Not only does she love Nature for the sake of life, but she is also is a mother fiercely trying protect the worldââ¬â¢s natur al beauty for her daughter to relish. There is much life throughout this writing and she does a great job of portraying things as they are, without many of the biases that we find in society today. ââ¬Å"Raising children is a patient alchemy,â⬠she declares; Most important are Kingsolverââ¬â¢s reflections on her mission: because it aims to convey truths we know but canââ¬â¢t feel, ââ¬Å"good art is political, whether it means to be or not. The attention she brings to the natural world in her writing accomplishes what good writing should: it expands the universe and brings critical attention to things we might otherwise take for granted or never have even thought about. Iââ¬â¢ve read a few of her essays and they are human and believable. (I.e. her feelings and thoughts about alternative families, feminism, sustainability and the environment) about; her 2-year-old daughterââ¬â¢s acts of defiance, and occasionally frustration at the state of the world in which we live she does so with passion. The essay gives a warm tribute to our animal nature and its ability to tune itself into the natural rhythms of life, despite ourselves and our absorption in a world full of wants.

Megapnosaurus (Syntarsus) - Facts and Figures
Name: Megapnosaurus (Greek for big dead lizard); pronounced meh-GAP-no-SORE-us; also known as Syntarsus; possibly synonymous with Coelophysis Habitat: Woodlands of Africa and North America Historical Period: Early Jurassic (200-180 million years ago) Size and Weight: About six feet long and 75 pounds Diet: Meat Distinguishing Characteristics: Large size; bipedal posture; narrow snout; strong hands with long fingers About Megapnosaurus (Syntarsus) By the standards of the early Jurassic period, about 190 million years ago, the meat-eating dinosaur Megapnosaurus was huge--this early theropod may have weighed as much as 75 pounds, hence its unusual name, Greek for big dead lizard. (By the way, if Megapnosaurus sounds a bit unfamiliar, thats because this dinosaur used to be known as Syntarsus--a name that turned out to have already been assigned to a genus of insect.) Complicating matters further, many paleontologists believe that Megapnosaurus was actually a large species (C. rhodesiensis) of the much better-known dinosaur Coelophysis, the skeletons of which have been unearthed by the thousands in the American southwest. Assuming that it does deserve its own genus, there were two distinct variants of Megapnosaurus. One lived in South Africa, and was discovered when researchers stumbled on a bed of 30 tangled skeletons (the pack had apparently been drowned in a flash flood, and may or may not have been on a hunting expedition). The North American version sported small crests on its head, a hint that it may have been closely related to another smallish theropod of the late Jurassic period, Dilophosaurus. The size and structure of its eyes indicates that Megapnosaurus (aka Syntarsus, aka Coelophysis) hunted at night, and a study of the growth rings in its bones reveals that this dinosaur had an average life span of about seven years.
